Humiliating defeat at the AMEX a “Big lesson for us” admits Arteta.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta acknowledges elements of complacency from his players during the Gunners’ uncharacteristic performance that led to a shock 3-0 defeat. “We didn’t respect any principle of play.”

Arsenal slipped off the top spot in the Premier League today after tasting defeat as reigning champions for the first time this season, as they were dispatched 3-0 by Fabian Hürzeler’s superb Seagulls. Despite it being the Gunners’ first defeat of the 2026/27 campaign, Arteta showed minimal signs of sympathy for his squad and admitted that today’s result was a big reality check for Arsenal during his post-match press conference:

“We didn’t respect any principle of play that you have to, to get out of that man-to-man situation,” Arteta said in reaction to his side’s lost duels against Brighton’s increased tempo and relentless pressing style of play.

With the loss coming so early on in the season, Arsenal now have time to analyse and bounce back, with the boss explaining that today’s result was a “Big lesson for us [Arsenal].”

After an exciting and dominant start to their title defence in the league before today’s loss, many Gunners began dreaming of yet another trophy-winning campaign, which may have led to countless errors and lapses in concentration from the usually robust and well-drilled Arsenal side. Arteta revealed his frustrations, suggesting that “From the first throw you could sense it [a lacklustre performance].”

Now the Premier League steps aside for the first international break to commence, which gives time for Arteta and his staff to lick their wounds and look to correct any wrongdoings from today in their first game back when they host Leeds at the Emirates on Saturday 10th October.
