Frank Lampard compares Coventry star to Chelsea icon after ending search for win

Frank Lampard claims Coventry matchwinner Jay Dasilva reminds him of Ashley Cole following his goal against Nottingham Forest. The Sky Blues scored their first goal of the season against their Midland rivals on Saturday evening as the defender ran through unchallenged and fired home.

It was enough to see Coventry secure their first win of the campaign. And speaking about Da Silva’s goal, boss Lampard compared him to former Chelsea teammate Cole.

He said: "He reminded me of Ashley Cole because he scored a few of those. And it was really good. The first touch was outstanding and the finish was outstanding and what a time to do it. He has been brilliant for us."

On Coventry’s victory, Lampard added: "The players deserve it. It's really important for some of the players, for many of them it is their debut in the Premier League, they haven't been here before and they need to feel like they belong and play like that. They took on the gamplan really well. I am delighted for the players to have that feeling.

"It's not a nice feeling [losing] albeit the Brighton result looks a bit better today after what they've done against Arsenal.

There was a slight scare for Coventry in Nottingham, with Igor Jesus equalising. But the goal was ruled out following a VAR review due to a foul by the Brazilian striker.

On that decision, Lampard said: "You make your own luck in terms of VAR, I think it was a foul but when you work that hard I think the boys deserve it. It's huge mentally for the team. We are a team with a lot of players having their first stint in Premier League football. Not everyone is a Wayne Rooney or a superstar that can just own it. This can now hopefully give us confidence. The boys today have shown they can do it.

"We know their system really well. We have played a couple of good teams and maybe gone a bit more direct than we wanted to, so we tried to set up to give ourselves a chance to play against them. The first half we played well and I just wondered if we had enough conviction to score a goal and that's what I said to them at half-time and Jay [Dasilva] popped up.

"I was worried. I went back to the bench and they said it looked like he'd stumbled but as they took time on it you can see he has that step on him which puts him off balance and it's a foul. It's VAR getting the right decision."
