Levi Colwill sounds the alarm as Chelsea star names problem Xabi Alonso must fix

Chelsea will look to return to winning ways when they face Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 10, after the international break.

Levi Colwill has warned his Chelsea teammates that they can't rely on Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro to pull a rabbit out of the hat. The Blues failed to find the net for the first time this season, losing 3-0 to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night.

Chelsea had appeared to turn over a new leaf when they held the Bees to a goalless draw at the break. But Keith Andrews' side leapt out of the gates in the second half and broke the deadlock on the hour mark following a well-worked corner routine finished by Jaidon Anthony.

In a desperate effort to at least salvage a point, Xabi Alonso rolled the dice and switched to a back-four. Igor Thiago eventually doubled Brentford's lead before Fabio Carvalho put the third and final nail in the coffin.

Chelsea enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but failed to beat Caoimhin Kelleher. The Blues manager was without Pedro and a few other big names, so he deployed Danny Welbeck alongside Palmer and Rogers.

Despite the deputy striker's best efforts, he couldn't get Chelsea over the line. Although Welbeck fell short of expectations, many of his teammates did, too, and Colwill wants them to shoulder more of the workload going forward.

In an interview with club media after the game, the Blues vice-captain, who donned the armband in the absence of Moises Caicedo, said: "It was tough.

"First of all, conceding from a set-piece isn’t the best, and then we tried to push and maybe over-exposed ourselves and played some passes we shouldn’t [have] and forced it.

"I feel we needed to relax and not push too hard for the equaliser; we needed to believe it would come if we continued playing our football. But I think we pushed too hard to get it, and they hurt us on the counter.

"They get the second goal, and then the third goal really hit home and hurt. The second half we weren’t good enough, obviously, and we’ve got a lot to work on during the international break."

Colwill insisted that, no matter who is deployed in attack, everyone needs to pull their weight. The 23-year-old defender said: "We can’t rely on the front three to pull us out of danger; the rest of us have to try to help as much as possible.

"The defence, the midfield and the attackers, we all need to help each other much more. We’ve definitely got a lot of room to improve."

Alonso now has three weeks to prepare for Chelsea's next clash. After the international break, the Blues will look to return to winning ways when they face Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 10.
