Joao Pedro is a doubt to face Brentford on Friday night after the Chelsea star out of the Brazil squad with an injury.

It was announced on Wednesday that the forward had withdrawn from Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, raising concerns about his fitness ahead of this week’s Premier League fixture.

But Xabi Alonso said in his pre-match press conference that Pedro could still feature in the match and will make a late decision on his availability.

“In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session [on Friday],” Alonso said.

“No-one is ruled out. I remain cautious and we wait. We will see if he’s ready to play. We will take a decision.”

The Spaniard would not give any details on the nature of Pedro’s injury issues and when asked if he could play for Chelsea against Brentford and not for Brazil, he responded: “It is a possibility.”

Moises Caicedo is “getting closer” to a return to action, while captain Reece James is a doubt to feature after missing training on Tuesday.

As with Pedro, Alonso says he will make a late decision on their involvement, as well as Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra.

“Tomorrow, final decision,” he added. “Sorry mate, I’m repeating but your questions sound the same. We need to assess all the decisions with the last training. Tomorrow we will take the decisions.”
