Harry Maguire faces a long road back from the England wilderness after his family's social media outburst before the World Cup.

The Manchester United defender is not in the 27-man England squad named by manager Thomas Tuchel despite the head coach being without defenders John Stones and Dan Burn who both played in the summer tournament in America.

Maguire broke the news of his exclusion last May by tweeting about his 'shock' before the World Cup party had even been announced. Meanwhile his mother Zoe said on the same platform that she was 'absolutely disgusted' by Tuchel's decision.

Asked about Maguire at today's squad announcement, Tuchel said: 'I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life, because I'm not that type of person.

'I can forget easily and quickly, but I didn't like it and it doesn't help.'

Another player who may soon find himself in the same boat is Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White.

The Forest star has missed out again, with Tuchel explaining that he simply has too many 'number tens' to choose from.

But Gibbs-White's partner Britney De Villiers reacted to this morning's announcement by posting a Premier League stat on Instagram pointing out that he is the only player to create more than five chances in a single game this season.

Of the new players selected, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is in ahead of Maguire after recovering from injury problems to play well so far this season.

'We have had Jarrad for a long time on our radar and in our notes,' said Tuchel.

'It's big potential.

'He's fast, tall, good in build-up, has a strong left foot.

'It seems like he has a good package to offer. The coach at Everton speaks very highly of him.'
