Chelsea star makes 'bullied' admission as alarm bells ring for Xabi Alonso

Chelsea were on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday night with Levi Colwill giving his verdict

Chelsea star Levi Colwill has expressed concerns about Chelsea being “bullied” on the pitch following their defeat to Brentford in the Premier League. The Blues suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Bees on their away trip to the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night.

Xabi Alonso’s side went into the half-time break level on the score sheet with Brentford, but conceded three second-half goals, including one from a corner.

Jaidon Anthony opened the scoring for Brentford from a corner in the second half, while Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho ensured the Bees left their home stadium with all three points and a victory over Chelsea.

Colwill played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea and wore the captain’s armband, and expressed concern for the manner in which the Blues have conceded goals from set pieces.

"It was tough. First of all, seeing the set piece, obviously we weren't the best,” Colwill told Sky Sports.

“We tried to push and maybe overexpose ourselves, play some passes we shouldn't have and forced it.

"They hit us on the counter, which they're so good at, and got the second goal. The third goal really hit home and hurt.

"In the second half, we weren't good enough, obviously. We've got a lot to work on over the international break.

"We have not been good enough, at times we have been bullied and we need to improve at that, but we trust in out set-piece coach, we are still adjusting to new things, but we do need to improve as a team."

Brentford captain Vitaly Janelt also pointed towards set pieces being a planned area that he and his teammates looked to take advantage of against Chelsea.

"We did target it at half-time,” Janelt told Sky Sports. “We had gone to the front post twice and then said there was a big gap at the far post.

"We targeted that and I think it was our first corner of the second half."

The result means Chelsea remain in seventh place in the Premier League and will now have to wait more than three weeks before they are back in action, with the extended international break getting underway after this weekend.

Alonso will now have an eye on October 10, which will see Chelsea face Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge in their next top-flight fixture.
