Brighton shock Arsenal to end Champions’ perfect start

Brighton produced a stunning display to hand Premier League champions Arsenal their first defeat of the season, cruising to a 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls made a fast start and immediately put the visitors under pressure. Charalampos Kostoulas forced David Raya into an early save before Pascal Gross broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark, curling a superb effort from outside the box beyond the Arsenal goalkeeper.

The Gunners struggled to establish control and came close to an equaliser before the interval when a quick counter-attack left Bukayo Saka with an opening, but his effort was straight at Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton punished that miss almost immediately. Kostoulas was given too much room on the edge of the area and made no mistake, drilling a low strike into the bottom corner to send the hosts into half-time two goals ahead.

Mikel Arteta made no changes during the break, but Arsenal were unable to produce the response required. Brighton extended their lead 12 minutes after the restart when Groß delivered a dangerous corner and Chema Andrés rose highest to head home his first Premier League goal.

The Seagulls threatened a fourth through Pascal Struijk, who headed narrowly wide, while Verbruggen later denied Kai Havertz after the substitute had been played through.

Raya also kept the score down with a late save from Matt O'Riley, but Brighton were already in complete control.

The result ends Arsenal's nine-game winning run and lifts Brighton into third, while the champions remain second on goal difference.
