Alonso slams Chelsea flops after Brentford thumping - 'It is not enough'

Xabi Alonso admits the way Chelsea ended in their loss at Brentford was "not enough to compete in the Premier League" after they were humbled 3-0.

It means the Blues have now failed to win their last three outings following their loss at Arsenal and the draw with Hull. Their Friday night game at their west London rivals remained goalless until just after the hour mark, when Jaidon Anthony headed home the opener from a set piece.

Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho both scored in the final ten minutes as the Bees recorded a dominant win, with the performance levels in the final period not sitting well with the Chelsea boss.

Alonso, who was without Joao Pedro and Reece James for the loss, admits the Blues are not consistent enough to compete for the entirety of a game - something they desperately need to address.

He said: "I’m disappointed at the end with the second half and the result. This is not enough to compete in the Premier League, not to be able to go for the 90 minutes. This is why today we were punished.

"At the moment, we are not being consistent enough to compete during the whole game – 45 [minutes] is not enough, you need to play the whole game knowing each detail is important and each action can be decisive.

"We dropped our consistency, and our competitive mentality needed in the second half. It's about 95 minutes, and we have not been able to keep that level throughout these few games in the start of the season. It's something that we'll have to do better."

Even after their quick start to the season red flags had been raised about Chelsea's defensive lapses. Prior to taking on Brentford their goals conceded column and their lack of clean sheets had them ranked among the Premier League's worst, and they shipped another three at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The defeat leaves Chelsea in seventh, but with 18 teams still to play across the weekend, meaning they could drop into the bottom half.

Levi Colwill, who was the skipper on Friday night, admitted that they were bullied by Brentford, whose opener came from a corner. He told Sky Sports : "Not good enough. At times we have been bullied in the box and we definitely need to improve. We have full trust in our set-piece coach and are still adjusting to new ideas, but we need to improve as a team."
