Footballer Jesus de Miguel tragically dies as heartbreaking statement released

Tenerife have confirmed the tragic news that Jesus de Miguel has died aged 30 following a collision in a game on Monday night.

The harrowing incident occurred in the closing stages of their Spanish Segunda clash with Andorra when De Miguel ran onto a long ball up the pitch. Just as he looked to bring it down, he was taken out by the flying knee of goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who was sent off for the challenge.

The 30-year-old lay motionless on the pitch for a few seconds before the players soon realised the severity of the situation and demanded medical treatment, with the match subsequently abandoned.

De Miguel was rushed to hospital, where it was confirmed in the early hours that his neurological condition was worsening, with the Spanish side confirming his death hours later.

Video footage in the aftermath captured Owono turning round to check on De Miguel while others could not watch the distressing scenes. Despite the concern, Tenerife had issued a positive statement on Monday, before revealing his chronological condition was worsening and then confirming his sad death.

Opponents on the day, Andorra, later issued a statement of their own to social media. That read: "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife."
