‘1-0 to the Arsenal’: Arteta restores club’s gritty identity

Arsenal fans famously celebrated the club’s ability to grind out wins during the nineties. George Graham’s successful side was built on defensive strength, with the club’s iconic ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ chant popularised during that period.
The chants origins date back to the nineties, with some suggesting it was born during a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in September 1992, and others claiming it wasn’t until March 1994, when Arsenal beat Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final.
The club’s fabled back four featuring Lee Dixon, Steve Bould, Tony Adams and Nigel Winterburn regularly provided the foundation for narrow wins, and Arsenal have rebuilt that reputation under Mikel Arteta.
Sunday’s 1-0 win over Liverpool means no team has won more games 1-0 than Arsenal since Mikel Arteta was appointed Gunners boss in December 2019.
Their 1-0 success at Anfield was their 33rd in the Premier League by that scoreline under Arteta, moving clear of Everton.
